STATEMENT BY ATTORNEY GENERAL CORNYN ON FIFTH CIRCUIT RULING ON WOMEN'S MEDICAL CENTER OF NW HOUSTON, ET. AL. V. BELL, ET. AL
AUSTIN - Attorney General John Cornyn released the following statement today on this ruling:
"I am pleased by Friday's ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth District, which upheld state regulation of physicians who perform more than 300 abortions annually in their office. These common-sense regulations, which have applied to abortion clinics in Texas for 16 years, seek to protect the health, safety, and welfare of women who choose to have an abortion. The regulations have neither the purpose, nor the effect, of limiting Texas women's access to abortion. To the contrary, the regulations guarantee that qualified personnel will be performing the procedure under safe conditions."
