National Focus Highlights the Importance of Tire Safety During Vacation Season

AUSTIN - Texas Attorney General John Cornyn today endorsed a nationwide public awareness campaign aimed at tire safety and maintenance in an effort to make highway travel safer for motorists this summer and throughout the year.

The "Safe Trip" campaign delivers the message that safe travel starts with safe tires, and that means checking tire pressure before hitting the road.

"Proper tire inflation decreases risks and increases gas mileage, while improper inflation results in thousands of accidents per year. Traffic safety experts are quick to point this out," said Attorney General Cornyn. "And vehicle tires are particularly stressed during the long hot summers we experience in Texas. As the Memorial Day weekend draws nearer -- the official start of the summer travel season -- we need to emphasize that proper tire maintenance can save lives on Texas highways."

Television and radio announcements will air in several media markets during the three peak summer travel holidays - Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. These ads encourage drivers to routinely check tire inflation, and wear and tear on their tires. The ads also warn drivers against placing their families at risk by failing to do so, even if the tires look fine.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that almost 42,000 people were killed on the nation's highways last year, while more than three million were injured. The agency estimates that proper tire inflation could help save up to 80 lives a year and prevent nearly 10,000 injuries.

"Safe Trip" is a nationwide campaign sponsored by state attorneys general and state offices of consumer protection. Funding for this effort was set aside as part of the national settlement reached last November with Bridgestone/Firestone.
