As of 2020, there were over 270,000 unsolved homicides in the United States and approximately 20,072 unsolved homicides in the state of Texas. To assist law enforcement agencies across the state of Texas with their cold case investigations, the Texas Attorney General's Office created the Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit in March 2021. The Unit provides assistance and support to law enforcement agencies across the state in the investigation and prosecution, (if applicable), of unsolved cases including homicides, missing persons, and other matters centered around human identification  and  forensic genealogy.
