The OAG can bring civil suits against traffickers, as well as those who tolerate their crimes for financial gain.

A successful human trafficking civil suit can result in a $250,000 fine per victim and an injunction that will prohibit traffickers and their associates from operating in the state of Texas.

A civil suit and a criminal prosecution are not mutually exclusive. Nor is a criminal prosecution a prerequisite to a civil cause of action. The OAG can bring a civil suit to pursue additional avenues of justice beyond criminal prosecution or to provide accountability to traffickers when no criminal charges are filed.

The OAG can also bring or assist in other civil actions, such as nuisance abatement where the underlying nuisance is human trafficking or prostitution-related offenses.
