Have you lost financial support because of a violent crime? You may be eligible for some reimbursement. Here’s what you need to know:

Too often, the dependents of crime victims are left without financial support from the offender due to the crime. If this is your situation, the Crime Victims' Compensation (CVC) Program might be able to help. You may be eligible for compensation to help replace the support you’ve lost. Compensation for loss of support covers income or financial support that is no longer available because of the crime.

Who Can Get Help?

You may qualify for assistance if you are:

  • A victim who has a dependent(s) and lost financial support due to the crime   

Dependents include individuals defined as such by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service code or the legal/informal spouse of a victim who has died as a result of the crime.

How Much Can the CVC Program Cover?

  • For crimes after July 14, 2016, the program covers up to $700 per week for loss of support up to 13 weeks
  • For crimes before July 14, 2016, other limits apply

How Do I Receive Loss of Support Assistance?

  1. Apply for the CVC Program: Submit your application online or by mail. We'll guide you through the process and let you know what documents are needed.
  2. Provide Proof of Dependency: Be prepared to submit documents such as:
    • Court order or divorce decree establishing guardianship
    • Child’s birth certificate
  3. Provide Proof of Financial Support: Include documents like:
    • Offender income such as paycheck stubs, tax transcripts, W-2
    • Proof of child support received
  4. Submit Your Paperwork: Once you have submitted a CVC application, you can either use the provided form link to upload your documents or mail them directly to us.
